New Update from the Rally from WJBC

Local residents battled over the issue of healthcare reform in Uptown Normal Saturday afternoon. Congresswoman Debbie Halvorson has decided to vote for the Health Insurance Reform Bill before Congress. Those opposing the legislation gathered outside her office to voice their concerns.

COMMENTARY:

Yes, I’m being a bit over-dramatic.

Pro and con health-care bill rallies are on today in front of Congresswoman Debbie Halvorson’s (D) office in Normal.  Halvorson, who as of today is still in the undecided column, faces stiff competition in former Republican Congressman Jerry Weller’s old district, by Bloomington-native Adam Kinzinger who walloped his GOP opponents in the February Primary. Halvorson is extremely vulnerable.

Kinzinger has a grass-roots style of campaigning second only to Rep. Dan Brady and Cong. Tim Johnson; and it’s an awfully close second.  Add to that the national money he has attracted, and it will be interesting how Halvorson votes.  My guess;  she’s a “yes”.  A yes, loses her crucial votes in her Republican-leaning district.   A “no” vote, loses DNC money, which she must have to win.  The old “rock and a hard place.”

Are the days gone, (did they ever exist), where a politician, Republican or Democrat,  votes for something for all the right reasons?

Health-care rallies are ongoing throughout the state and nation as the vote-count for this controversial legislation may be announced tomorrow by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.  Rep. House leader Boehner has asked Pelosi for a roll-call vote so all votes are recorded publicly.

Pelosi won’t go through this on Sunday unless she has the votes; otherwise they have to pull out a legislative maneuver which they surely want to avoid at all costs; but they’ll use it if they have to.

My bet is they have the votes; and historic health-care legislation advances; for better or for worse.  Time will tell.

A recent poll shows Kinzinger 12 points ahead of Halvorson.

It gets worse if she votes yes

    2. mcpundit says:

wow, thanks for the update. . . wow

    3. The Irascible Fachna says:

The NEW McPundit HAS no “top” to vault. The roses are strewn along the path to county office, and there’s no longer any need to conceal the true nature of a chief pourer and sugar-lump distributor in the Tea Party ….. Party.

    4. The Irascible Fachna says:

Well, MY report from Uptown Normal has it that the “small, deadly space” between the lines was filled with lovely floral blooms, sweetly singing birds, and cute, fuzzy bunnies. One (count him – 1) teabagger seemed to be giving off premonitory signs of going volcanic, but he was immediately seized by several of his brothers and sisters and sugar cubes were stuffed into his cheeks until he resembled a bipedal hamster. No comparative force numbers were reported to me, so it can only be concluded that our Forces of Darkness were outnumbered by at least 1,000-to-1. Have Lipton’s Forces of Light had their aerial photographs developed yet?

Oh, and it’s undeniably Spring – I’ve heard that a T*rd Blossom has been seen in Peoria.

    5. NormalRedefined says:

So, if Halvorson believes voting yes is actually the “right” thing to do, and she knows it might cost her votes and lose her re-election, wouldn’t that be a politician doing things for all the right reasons? Or are “all the right reasons” only the things one certain group believes are right?

    6. The Irascible Fachna says:

Now that’s the sort of political reasoning that plucks the mystic chords of memory!

Gene Debs lost every election ….. but ultimately won every policy point. As my new favorite political philosopher, Ma Joad, puts it at the end of “The Grapes of Wrath”:

“Rich fellas come up an’ they die, an’ their kids ain’t no good an’ they die out. But we keep a’comin’. We’re the people that live. They can’t wipe us out; they can’t lick us. We’ll go on forever, Pa, ’cause we’re the people.”

Right just keeps getting up, dusting itself off, and trying again. Wrong just keeps getting worn out and weaker.

    7. gopbill says:

I think this post wondered about any Party making the right decisions for the right reasons and gave information of ‘BOTH SIDES’ being in Normal. This is a Republican leaning site but the minute MCp expresses more posts that way, one or sometimes a grand total of 2 Democrats try to demean her. I think you all should start your own blog; trust me, we won’t be reading your blog, as you do this one. Then you can gripe and moan away. Keep up the good work McP; and you should be even more GOP biased; rip ‘em a new one!

    8. The Irascible Fachna says:

Tea Partiers oughtn’t to masquerade as “…your fathers’ Republicans.” – on or off a Republican “leaning (!) site – but should stand proudful behind their placards and epithets.

Loved yesterday’s new placard: “If [U.S. Senator Scott] Brown Can’t Stop It, A Browning Can!” (Illustrated with a silhouette of the Browning HiPower 9mm semi=automatic pistol]

    9. Dark Knight says:

Where can I get one of those placards?

    10. NormalRedefined says:

      Really, gopbill?

McPundit asked “Are the days gone, (did they ever exist), where a politician, Republican or Democrat, votes for something for all the right reasons?” and it was in reference to how Halvorson might vote on the health care bill.

In that regard, my question was very legitimate. And, by the way, unanswered still to this point.

I was in no way demeaning McPundit.

And what makes you think I’m a democrat?

One of the things I appreciate about McPundit is that she does attempt to present various sides on this blog. And she’s a reasonable person in real life too. You should try that sometime.
